Production Studies Network

Construction Site

Production Studies represents an emergent field of inquiry that fundamentally challenges architecture's traditional separation of design from construction by centering the material realities of building labor and production processes. The field originated through the groundbreaking Translating Ferro/Transforming Knowledges of Architecture, Design and Labour for the New Field of Production Studies (TF/TK) project, a four-year collaboration between Brazilian and UK scholars funded by FAPESP and the AHRC from 2020 to 2024. Led by Professor João Marcos de Almeida Lopes and Professor Katie Lloyd Thomas, TF/TK brought together an international network of researchers, practitioners, and activists to establish Production Studies as a critical framework for understanding the built environment through the lens of labor relations, material culture, and the politics of making. The project's dual mandate—translating the seminal work of Brazilian architect-theorist Sérgio Ferro into English while simultaneously transforming architectural knowledge—created the conceptual foundation for this new field of study.
